Project

The research project ‘Social Technologies in Emergency Management’ started in 2014 with the goal to examine the use of social media by emergency management and response organizations in local and state government. We include the following five types of organizations into our analysis: fire departments, law enforcement agencies, emergency medical care providers, public health organizations, and executive emergency management departments.

We focus our research on two different areas:

(a) social media tactics

  1. to push out information to the public,
  2. to pull information in from first-first responders, and
  3. to network and listen to the network.

(b) social media content during the phases of the emergency management cycle to provide emergency event preparedness tips, after-action reports, or opportunities for community engagement to learn about preparedness.
